On your marks. Scripture, reflection and prayer.
Mark 13:32-37 "“But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven’s angels, not even the Son. Only the Father. So keep a sharp lookout, for you don’t know the timetable. It’s like a man who takes a trip, leaving home and putting his servants in charge, each assigned a task, and commanding the gatekeeper to stand watch. So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. You don’t want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. I say it to you, and I’m saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch.”
Reflection. One of the themes of the New Testament is 'immanence.' The idea that God might wrap up history at any moment. The idea (almost) of now and not yet. It is as though, as Christians, we live in the pause between 'On your marks' and 'Go.'
This not a waiting and doing nothing sort of pause. The 'get set' part is about living the life allotted to us by Christ Jesus. It is about each of us fulfilling our calling as disciples. Being about our business. Now, of course, the working for Jesus does not bring about our salvation. No, but being able to serve Christ is a result of being saved.
The 'Go' signal is the Return of Jesus. And, His Return is immanent. It may even be before I finish writing this sentence - or not!
Prayer. Jesus said, "Surely I am coming soon."
Amen. Come Lord Jesus!
