Spoiler alert: there will be politics....
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
Reflection. Asylum is a big issue in our country. Families fleeing persecution use small boats to travel across the English channel. They are fleeing persecution. This is a very dangerous and illegal route into the country. The argument they could stay in other countries which are safe. It is worth reminding ourselves that that these countries accept many, many more More refugees than we do. It is very difficult to find a legal route into this country even if you are fleeing the threat of death through persecution or war. The response of our government is both to threaten deportation to Rwanda and to house these asylum seekers in substandard accommodation. Surely we are better than that. The history of shipping people off to other countries because they are unwanted is horrible. For Jewish people the comparison with shipping people to Rwanda resonates with the threat of their people being threatened with shipping to Madagascar. Holding unwanted people in substandard camps resonates as well. Over the Christmas period, there was a shooting in Paris. The perpetrator declared that he had done so because he hated immigrants. Please don't think I am equating our government with nazi Germany. Really I am wondering about slippery slopes. I am not naive and I know there are few easy answers.
Quite simply, Jesus and his family were assylum seekers fleeing death. Would he have found a welcome in our country? Would he have had to be housed in a camp? Well, at least he wasn't in a small boat having paid a fortune to a people smuggler... There is a modern Christian song which declares that all are welcome here. The uk's response to asylum shakers from Ukraine has been wonderful. I would want to welcome more people who need our love and shelter.
Prayer. Lord God almighty, as you have welcomed us in Jesus , may we welcome others. Amen.
