Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
Firstly, did you notice the international nature of the very early church. There were Africans, Greeks, Jews and Romans. We think that the church wanting to be open and inclusive and welcoming to all is something new. It isn't. It is something we had drifted from and, perhaps, we need to repent of our part in exclusion.
Secondly, people were set apart for a work to which the Holy Spirit had called them. Hands were laid on them, there was prayer and fasting and sending out. This one of the ways that God still works. Is the Holy Spirit speaking to you today?
Prayer. Come Holy Spirit and lead us forwards. For the glory of the Risen Lord Jesus. Amen.
