The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoashwas king of Israel.
Reflection. There is real courage, trust and bravery concealed in this litter verse. However, you need to know a little bit if Old Testament history and a bit of geography. At this tine, Israel is divided into Souhern and Northern Kingdoms. Amos is from Tekoa. Tekoa is in the Southern Kingdom and he is called by God to prophecy to the Northern Kingdom. A shepherd and dresser of sycamore trees (Amos 7:14) is to speak before the king and his courtiers of a foreign country. Imagine that! Imagine a Ukrainian farm worker going to the Kremlin to berate Mr Putin. You would need real courage to respond to such a call from God. Amos had it. Amos had trust in God and had to respond - though calling aristocratic women 'cows of Bashan' (Amos 4:1) didn't go down well. They were oppressing the poor and needed calling out. The wealthy and powerful oppressing, rather than lifting up, the poor has a long history. It needs calling out today. Which of us has the courage, bravery and trust in God like Amos.
Prayer. Lord Jesus when you call, please give me the trust, courage and bravery to respond. Even if it as small a thing to Find One. For your sake. Amen.
