"So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”“From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
Reflection. A child possessed. A family distressed. And Jesus...
"If you can do anything." What a heartfelt cry is here being made to Jesus. "If you can do anything." Jesus's response is almost wonderment and surprise, "If you can?" Is he asking the child's father whether he believes. Well, maybe. The man does believe but even then exclaims and asks for more faith.
"If you can do anything." This is one of those moments that chimes so well with my reality all too often. I know that God can work miracles in my life, in all our lives, in the best and worst of contexts. Yet, I find myself wondering, 'can he?' Am I, are we, courageous and honest enough to ask for more faith.
Prayer. Lord Jesus, I believe; help my unbelief!! Amen.
