“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Fasting has a real purpose, and it is not to do with weight control, although some people use it for that. No, fasting is a Spiritual act. Fasting can bring a closeness to God in an especial way. It is a Spiritual discipline which says, 'I am committing this time wholly to God for God to use.' Fasting is often linked to prayer. Did you notice, that unless it is a whole church event, that fasting is a very private thing to do. Those who know me well, might guess that I could do with fasting...for my waistline!
May I always be committed to you, my Lord. May my life be a 'fast.' In the name of Jesus. Amen.
