1 Corinthians 16:21-24
I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Let anyone be accursed who has no love for the Lord. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with all of you in Christ Jesus.
There is much in these few words. Firstly, Paul wrote this final greeting himself. Most of the time he would have dictated his thoughts to a scribe. Second, Paul called down a curse on those who do not love Jesus. That is both surprising and very strong. There is a context that brings out this emotion: Paul has been imprisoned and oppressed greatly. Clearly his anger spews out, as normally Paul is seeking to Find One rather than curse people. This feels a bit like that email we wish we hadnt sent! Next Paul cries out for the return of Christ Jesus. Do we do likewise? Lastly, his final prayer is for God's people: grace and love from and in Christ. As I said, there is such in these few words.
Sometimes, it is worth thinking just how much we can get out of a few words of Scripture. It is worth 'soaking' ourselves in Scripture. To extend the pun, we ought to swim in the word of God.
Prayer. Lord Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, help us to delve deeply into the word. In your name, your holy name. Amen.
