Matthew 6:1-4 NIV
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
We all know there are many, many people in great need. The numbers of those in poverty, or who are destitute are terribly high, and continue to grow. And prices of staple foodstuffs continue to rise at an accelerated rate. It is time for those of us with a surplus to be even more generous and share all the more. There are too many people on the margins.
Let's be very generous, cheerful givers - but do it on the quiet. God will know.
Lord Jesus, may we who have plenty notice the needy. May we be silent givers. In your name. For your glory. Amen.
