Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.
Reflection. I'll let you decide for yourselves whether Theophilus was a real person or an honorary title (just Google it). What I will say is that Luke has chosen to gather information diligently and write a detailed and orderly account of Jesus - 'events that have been fulfilled among us.' Luke found eyewitnesses to the events and wants Theophilus (and us) to know the truth. Luke is a fine and trustworthy historian.
What does this say to us? How about this: Jesus was a real person! However, this is that, 'I know it in my head' stuff, that our faith has a rigourous intellectual base. Better is to know in our hearts that Jesus is real and alive.
Prayer and thanksgiving. Lord Jesus we thank you for your servant, Luke. More we thank you that you know us and love us and that we can love and know you. Amen.
