I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy.
Have mercy on us, LORD, have mercy on us, for we have endured no end of contempt.
We have endured no end of ridicule from the arrogant, of contempt from the proud.
Reflection. The people have had more than enough of ridicule and contempt from those round about. It is revealing how the people react. In this psalm there is no lashing out at their enemies. No, indeed. Their focus turns to God and a plea for mercy. They relate their focus to the way slaves and servants pay close attention to their masters. I am challenged as to whether I pay such attention to my Loving Heavenly Father. What about you?
Prayer. O Lord our God, we lift our eyes to you. May we know more of your love and mercy. For Jesus's sake and his name. Amen.
