Psalms 107:10-16 NIV
Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labour; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for humankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
Rebellion against God brought about a terrible situation. The people found themselves imprisoned and undertaking 'bitter labour.' Then they cried out to God and found forgiveness, freedom and were able to give thanks. God does wonderful things, he shows his steadfast love. Whoever thought of God breaking down metal gates and breaking prison bars? Well, we ought to have done so! Jesus said that he came to set the captives free. If you, if I, know that a besetting sin imprsons me and you, let's be encouraged to recall that Jesus has the power (and the desire!) to set us free.
Lord God Almighty, please forgive my rebellious nature. Set me free, I pray. Lord Jesus, come and save me from myself. Amen.
