Rest. Scripture, reflection and prayer - 27 Sept

Matthew 11:28-30 "“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Reflection.  There is a song by Cliff Richard that includes something wonderful about the love of God for us. The chorus runs:
"You know me better than I know myself
Better than I know myself
Time after time you've shown it to be true
That no one loves me like you."
Folk who know me best say l am pretty decent at insisting people take care of themselves, whilst being not so good at practicing what l preach in this area.  Well, I am grateful that God knows me better than l know myself.
Jesus promises rest to those who come to him.

A friend Rachel Parkinson reminded folk that September can be pretty full for Methodists - it is our New Year after all. I am not complaining, but my September has been a rush of many things. Life has been both great and full; no dull moments at all.  The thing is where do we locate Jesus in all this.

Jesus promises rest to those who come to him.

God knows me better than I know myself. Jesus knows our needs better than we know them ourselves.  Part of my usual practice is to spend time over the weekend praying for the coming week; out comes the diary and praying begins. This week is replete....with space and time.  No planning by me in this. Just a sense of deep knowing that the God, who knows me better than I know myself, is on my side and at my side.  Almost as though Jesus is saying, 'if you won't come to me for rest, I'll make sure you get some.' Almost.

If this post seems more selfish than most please forgive me. Please also know so well and deeply that the Lord who is on my side is on your side as well.

Jesus promises rest to those who come to him.

Prayer. Lord Jesus, may we all find that you are our rest. We place ourselves into your loving hands.  Hug us to your chest, we pray. Amen.
