1 Thessalonians 5:23-28
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. Brothers and sisters, pray for us. Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Reflection. To paraphrase the great Mr John Wesley, Methodism was raised up to spread scriptural holiness across the land. Sanctify and it's cognate sanctification are about holiness.
St Paul invites entire sanctification; our spirit soul and body to be whole and healthy and blameless. Why does he pray this for the Thessalonians and us? Because the Lord Jesus is coming. It is Advent Sunday in two days. Advent leads us to both thinking of the birth and the return of Jesus. The timing of this reading today could barely better! God is good.
Prayer. Lord Jesus please make us ready for your coming. Amen.
