Matthew 18:1-5 NIV
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
Let's not get confused here. Jesus is not saying we should be childish in our behaviour, but we must have the childlike faith and trust. And, of course, we must also have that capacity towards unconditional love that children often exhibit. Additionally, at the time, children were not well regarded and seen as being a drain on family resources. So, to say we need to take the lowly position of a child is shocking. Utterly dependant, completely trusting and full of love.
Help me to be lowly and humble of heart. In Jesus's name. Amen.
