We start a new group daily devotions today: we will dip into some psalms.
O Lord, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
many are saying to me,
‘There is no help for you in God.’
But you, O Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
I cry aloud to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy hill.
I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.
I am not afraid of tens of thousands of people
who have set themselves against me all around.
Rise up, O Lord!
Deliver me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
Deliverance belongs to the Lord;
may your blessing be on your people!
David has had to flee from his son Absolom. Things did not look good for David. Yet, he understands that he is safe. He is safe because God is with him and protects him. Now, this is not a theology that says, 'nothing bad will come my way because I am a Christian.' That is foolishness. Indeed, Jesus said that following him would bring troubles.
But, however, yet...it is also true that our great security is found in Christ. As we discovered in the letter to Colossians, 'our lives are hidden with Christ in God.' Ultimately, we have nothing and no-one to fear. 'You, O Lord, are a shield around me.' 'Deliverance belongs to the LORD.'
Lord God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may I trust in you. Amen.
