Value. Scripture, reflection and prayer
2 Samuel 24:24-25
But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord my God that have cost me nothing.” So David paid him fifty pieces of silver for the threshing floor and the oxen. David built an altar there to the Lord and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And the Lord answered his prayer for the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
Reflection. King David had been commanded to build an altar. When he approached Araunah to buy some of his property, Araunah offered it to the King free of charge and was even prepared to thrown in the cattle for the burnt offering.
Do we think David"s response is telling, 'I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord that have cost me nothing.' It makes me wonder about my own giving - does it really cost me anything? Do I give my best - burnt offerings were the best? Should I give my best suits to the jumble sale, or my cast offs? Should churches have jumble sale type events at all....
'I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord that have cost me nothing.'
Prayer. Lord God Almighty, Father Son and Holy Spirit, you are more than worthy of my very best offering...I worship you. In Jesus's name. Amen.
